Your switchboard is the heart of your home’s electrical system, but most people never give it a second thought until something goes wrong. The trouble is, an old or struggling switchboard isn’t just an inconvenience, it can be a genuine safety risk. Here are five signs yours might be due for an upgrade.
1. You’ve still got old ceramic or rewireable fuses
If your switchboard has those old porcelain fuses with the fuse wire you have to replace by hand, it’s a clear sign of an older board. These were standard decades ago, but they don’t offer the protection a modern home needs. If you’re still hunting for fuse wire when a circuit blows, it’s time to think about an upgrade.
2. No RCDs (safety switches)
This is the big one. RCDs, or residual current devices, are the safety switches that cut the power in a fraction of a second if they detect a fault, like electricity flowing where it shouldn’t, such as through a person. They are one of the most important safety features in a modern home, and older switchboards often don’t have them. If your board has no safety switches, your family doesn’t have that layer of protection.
3. The board trips constantly
The odd trip happens. But if your switchboard is tripping regularly, that’s it telling you something. It might be an overloaded circuit that can’t cope with modern appliances, a fault somewhere in the wiring, or a board that’s simply past its best. Constant nuisance tripping is worth getting looked at rather than just resetting and hoping.
4. It buzzes, smells hot, or feels warm
Your switchboard should be quiet and cool. If you hear buzzing or crackling, notice a hot or burning smell, or the board feels warm to the touch, switch off and call an electrician promptly. These can be signs of loose connections or overheating, which are real fire risks. Don’t sit on this one.
5. You’re adding heat pumps, EV charging or more appliances
Homes ask a lot more of their wiring than they used to. Heat pumps, EV chargers, induction cooktops, more devices everywhere. An older board simply wasn’t designed for that load. If you’re planning to add a heat pump or an EV charger, it’s a great time to check whether your switchboard can safely handle it. We always check this as part of a heat pump quote so there are no surprises.
What an upgrade involves
Upgrading a switchboard means replacing the old board with a modern one fitted with proper circuit protection and RCD safety switches, sized to handle your home’s needs now and into the future. Most domestic upgrades are done in a day, with the power off for only part of that. We’ll give you a clear timeframe and an honest price before we start.
